About DZYN Furnitures

What is Teak wood and Why Is It So Great?

A lot of people do not know about the benefits and usefulness of teakwood furniture items and often think it is too expensive for them to buy. However, in spite of the high cost, there are several good reasons to invest in a Teak wood furniture. Here in this article, you will learn everything about teakwood and know why it is rightfully called the ‘king of woods.’

A Brief Overview

Teakwood is typically obtained from the Tectona grandis tree. This tree is found in a large number of Asian countries, such as:

  • India
  • Thailand
  • Indonesia and
  • Myanmar.

There are teakwood plantations in several countries as well. However, the volume of plantations and their use may not be very high there since teak trees take a long time to grow. People are concerned about the environmental impact of excessive cutting of teak trees and, therefore, limit their usage. Moreover, there are specific countries that grow teak trees, especially for the production of teakwood.

It is the properties and typical features of teakwood that make it such a great wood type. Teak wood is one of the most popular kinds of wood available in the world and is valued by all for its superior quality, strength, and appearance. Mainly used to make beautiful furniture items, teakwood is also used to make boats, and other items.

In the heart of India, where tradition and craftsmanship are woven into the cultural fabric, Dzyn Furnitures was born from a simple yet profound passion: to create sacred spaces within homes through the art of crafting home temples from premium quality teakwood.

A Vision Rooted in Tradition

The founder of Dzyn Furnitures, Yogesh Relan grew up surrounded by the rich heritage of Indian woodwork. Their childhoods were filled with the intoxicating scent of freshly carved wood and the rhythmic sounds of chisels shaping intricate designs. This early exposure to the world of traditional woodworking instilled in them a deep respect for the craft and a desire to preserve its beauty and significance.

Quick Facts About Teak Wood

  • Teak wood typically grows in tropical regions because it needs warm climatic conditions for proper growth. The tree takes about 20 to 25 years to grow fully to produce top-quality teakwood. However, these trees can live for more than a hundred years!
  • One of the most significant features that sets teakwood apart from other hardwood varieties is the presence of lots of natural oils inside. This prevents water and moisture from damaging the wood. teakwood is also unaffected by termites and other insects. This means that you can use teakwood to make outdoor furniture items, unlike other types of wood.
  • Teakwood is extremely strong, hard, and solid. This makes it extremely strong and long-lasting. Typically, it can last for many years, irrespective of the rough weather. It is not damaged easily by sunrays, rain, or strong wind.
  • The texture of Teak wood makes it a good material to make furniture items. The golden-brown colour looks attractive. It ages over time to look even more beautiful. The natural grains in teakwood in a uniform pattern helps in cutting and shaping the wood.
  • Teakwood does not crack of bend easily even under heavy load. It does not lose its beauty and appearance even after several years.
  • Back in history, teakwood was used to make bridges and ships. Ancient people discovered the strength and usefulness of teakwood even in rough and tough conditions and therefore used it to build strong structures that are supposed to last for decades.
  • Teakwood furniture is tough and needs little maintenance. However, a little care will make it look just as new for many years to come. Regular cleaning with a damp, soft cloth or using a mild soap and water solution will prevent dust and debris from accumulating on it and affecting its look. You may also apply some special furniture oils to protect the shine and colour of teakwood.
  • Premium quality Teak wood is more expensive than other types of hardwood mainly because the trees take a long time to mature and produce top-quality wood. Moreover, the cost is affected by the high demand and unique natural properties of teakwood.

Primary Uses of Teak Wood

Teak wood is mostly used for making indoor and garden furniture items; however, in addition to that, it is also used for the following purposes:

Decking, Flooring, Siding, Marine trim, Special millwork, Marine interiors, and Mouldings.

In addition to the above, teakwood is also used to make teak oil. This oil is used in wood finishing to add a warm and rich touch as well as to give a new-look appearance to old furniture that may have lost its shine. Teak oil typically prevents the wood from being damaged by the UV rays of the sun or moisture.

The Weight Aspect

The weight of a teakwood furniture item will be much more than the same item made from other types of hardwood.  The main reason behind the heavy weight of teakwood is its solid construction and very tiny and uniform pores.

However, the weight of all types of Teak wood may not be the same. It mainly depends on the grade of the teakwood and its construction. Typically, an A-grade Teak wood is much heavier than other grades. This is mainly because:

  • It is obtained from the core of the tree trunk.
  • It has solid fibers of cellulose.
  • It has a very high concentration of teak oil.

Advantes of teakwood

Teakwood is available in different grades, which is determined by the portion of the tree trunk from which the wood is obtained. The central part is best for durability, quality, and oil content. Lower-quality Teak wood is often graded as Grade B and Grade C.

There are a few specific practices and factors to look for while choosing a teakwood furniture, such as:

  • Grade: Always look for products made from A-grade teakwood. This will ensure high quality. Typically, A-grade Teak wood will have long grains in a smooth and straight pattern. The texture will be fine to the touch.
  • Oil content: Typically, the best way to check the concentration of natural oils in the teakwood is to look at the natural grains. A-grade Teak wood will have higher oil content. If you notice interlocking or wany grains in the wood, it is better to avoid them as they will have less oil concentration. If possible, you may also scratch the surface slightly. If you feel it is waxy or oily to touch, go for it.
  • Authenticity: If you are not buying your furniture from reputed and reliable sources like DYZN Furniture, you must additionally focus on the authenticity of the wood. Typically, teakwood is often imitated by cheaper alternatives like acacia and rubberwood. Therefore, make sure you check the origin details or the certification for its authenticity.
  • Colour: The natural colour of teakwood is golden-brown. Any other colour that is different from it or looks too dark or too pale is not genuine. Avoid them as they are of lower quality. However, if the teakwood is new, the colour might be a bit light but do not worry as it will achieve its natural dark colour over time.
  • Dryness: Check for the dryness of the teakwood, especially if you intend to use it to make outdoor furniture items. Ideally, you must choose wood that is dried in the kiln or furnace. This will ensure proper dryness and will also be more stable, being less prone to shrinking or bending.
  • Moisture content: If you have access to a moisture meter, check the moisture content in the wood, especially if you use it for decking or making furniture. Ideally, teakwood has around 10 to 12% moisture content and plays a crucial role in preventing the wood from bending or cracking. If you do not have a moisture meter, ask the seller how the wood is dried.
  • Joint work: If you are buying teakwood furniture especially, check for the joint work. Usually, top-quality teakwood furniture has tenon or mortise joints. These specific types of joints are much stronger than traditional nails or screws used for joining two pieces together. Moreover, furniture pieces with such joints signify good craftsmanship. If you do not know the names or their identities, simply ask the seller about the joint work.
